Can stain be used on cedar boards when paint was previously used (exterior boards)?

  1. You cannot Stain over painted surfaces… stain, unlike paint needs to be ABSORBED INTO the surface… while painting a surface applies a film coating to the surface… so take it from there…

  2. Yes and no. You can apply a solid color stain over the paint. This could refresh the color but won’t last. Stain is designed to penetrate into the wood not sit on top of a paint layer. Best to apply another coat of paint, with proper preparation of course.
