Can elastomeric paint be thinned to spray with an airless with a .015?

I have an airless with a 3/8″ hose and a .015″ tip, the paint calls for a 1/2″ hose with a .023″ tip. This paint is for stucco, I have wood exterior, last painted approx. 7 years ago.

  1. You can’t thin an elastomeric paint enough to spray with a .015 tip. The 3/8″ hose is OK as long as your airless sprayer is strong enough to push the paint. Add a small amount of water, 1/2 gallon per 5, and use a .021 tip. If you thin the elastomeric too much then more coats will be needed.

It’s also possible your airless sprayer isn’t powerful enough for this coating. Typically a 3/4 HP or greater is needed. Plus the longer the hose the more power is needed. Make sure to remove the filters from the pump and the gun. This will help the pump push the paint.

Many elastomeric paints can be used on wood surfaces as well as masonry. Check with the manufacture specs for recommendations pertaining to your product.
