You can’t get a lighter color by staining over a darker color. It will simply be a combination of the 2 colors. Too get a lighter color you will have to strip your cabinets down to bare wood and then apply the light colored wood stain.
The solvent based deglosser could remove a little stain, assuming no clear finish was ever applied. It’s doubtful it alone will remove enough to allow for a lighter stain color. Give it a try and see if it helps. If not then move on to either using a paint stripper to remove any existing clear finish and some stain or sanding to give you a new bare wood look.
