Sealing the color of the woodgrain.

I am working with a purple-colored wood and I want to keep the color exactly like it is. Do I need to use a sealer before putting on a clear gloss finish? I have used polyurethane and polyacrylic, both are changing the color of the cedar I am working with.

  1. All clear finishes will change the wood color at least a little. This is just like getting the wood wet with water. Poly and all oil base finishes add a yellowing color, amber color. Try a acrylic urethane, has no ambler color, or you might have to use a water clear lacquer.
