Can interior epoxy paint be used on cabinets?

I am curious if interior epoxy paints can be used to cover wood kitchen cabinets for a durable gloss finish?

One Response

  1. Yes, epoxy paint will work well. A good epoxy paint will cure to a hard shiny finish, very resistant to cleaners and general use. Additionally, epoxy paints provide a rock-hard finish that is easy to clean and maintain, making them ideal for kitchen cabinets that are subject to daily wear and tear. A good 2-part water based epoxy will be the easiest to use.

    **Challenges**
Brushing and rolling. Epoxies can be a bit thick and sticky, adding a little water to water-based epoxies should help, plus you will have a limited amount is time to apply, read the manufacture specs for this information. Epoxy paints are self-leveling, which helps achieve a smooth and glossy finish on wood cabinets, but also means lots of runs and sags if applied to thick.

    **Mixing**
Choose an epoxy that has a 50-50 mix ratio. This will make mixing small batches easier. I recommend mixing only enough epoxy to apply 1 coat at a time as this coating will harden in the bucket in just a few hours.

    **Preparation**
You still need to follow the basic steps for prep including priming.
