Are there weather limits in using elastomeric paint?

I live in the SW where elastomeric paints over stucco are common. My brother in Florida was told that elastomeric paint does not do well in that heat. Are there limitations on elastomeric usage?

  1. Elastomeric coatings are common in Florida, both residential and commercial uses. Once dry this coating will be fine. Your brother just needs to get hold of a good local painter.

Applying elastomeric paints in excessive heat isn't recommended. There is a way to get around this limitation if this is stucco; wet down the stucco wall before application. This is counter-intuitive but many manufactured do recommend doing this and it does work.

  2. There are indeed weather limits to consider when using elastomeric paint.

Temperature is a critical factor to consider when applying elastomeric paint. Most manufacturers recommend applying elastomeric paint within a specific temperature range, typically between 50°F and 90°F. Extreme temperatures can affect the paint’s ability to cure properly, leading to issues like poor adhesion, cracking, or blistering.

Humidity levels are another important consideration. High humidity can slow down the drying process of elastomeric paint, leading to potential adhesion issues and surface imperfections. Conversely, low humidity levels can cause the paint to dry too quickly, resulting in a compromised finish.

Weather conditions such as rain, snow, or high winds can also impact the application and performance of elastomeric paint. It is generally recommended to avoid painting with elastomeric coatings during inclement weather to ensure proper adhesion and curing.
