This mobile home has cheap groove paneling. Can you paint over it with an oil base primer and paint?

  1. Yes you can and your half way there with the oil based primer. The key is the initial prep. A good (very good) cleaning is needed. I like to use TSP, trisodium phosphate. But, any good degreasing cleaner will work. Next sanding, use a pole sander with 150-180 grit sandpaper. You should also wipe the paneling with a liquid deglosser/sander. This will remove anything left behind after the sanding and ready the surface for priming. The deglosser is like sanding but acts as your final cleaning, it will increase the adhesion of the primer.

After preparing the paneling, it is crucial to apply a high-quality primer specifically designed for slick surfaces like paneling. This will help the paint adhere better and provide a more durable finish. Once the primer has dried according to the manufacturer’s instructions, you can then apply your chosen paint color.

Take your time with the painting process, ensuring even coverage and allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. Depending on the color and type of paint you choose, you may need multiple coats to achieve the desired finish.
