You need to tell us what type of wood and flooring you have… even with a covered porch, you need to SEAL the wood on both sides to prevent rotting etc.
Stain by itself does nothing to protect the wood… after you stain the wood… use a porch & deck SEALER or better yet use a SPAR Varnish… GOOD LUCK!
Seal all sides if possible. A good decking stain will do the job. A poly porch-and-deck paint can be used for the top if you want extra abrasion protection.
