It’s not horse power (HP) but gallons per minute (GPM). A general rule is 1.5 gpm as a minimum for most elastomeric coatings. It really depends on the length of hose, size of tip (.025 typical) and overall thickness. The viscosity and thickness of elastomeric coatings demand a certain level of power to ensure proper atomization and delivery. Lower GPM models may struggle to handle the high pressures needed for spraying elastomerics, resulting in uneven application and potential clogging issues.
