Creative Painting for the Stairway

share

For many homeowners, the stairway is an afterthought. It is a means of connecting the floors of the house and not an area for decorating or design. However, painting the stairway with a decorative design or unique paint color can change the look and feel of the space. Instead of simply being a means to an end, it can become a space that is just as stylish as the rest of your home.

If you are ready to turn your stairway into something more than just a passageway, check out the ideas below to get you started.

So Vertical

Stairways that have low overhead clearance can produce a feeling of discomfort. Change the look and feel by painting vertical stripes along the wall. This will help to draw the eye up and create a sense of higher ceilings which will make the space seem less claustrophobic.

Begin by painting the walls a neutral color such as white or beige. If you want to carry the hallway or room color into the stairway from an adjoining room, be sure that it is a light color or the stairway will feel very closed in. Next, decide whether you prefer the look of wide stripes or thin pin-stripes. Use painter’s tape to map out the vertical stripes and paint them a complementary color. A great way to define the space is to use a stripe color that is also used in an upstairs hallway. This will help tie the floors together and create a natural transition from each level. Be sure that the stripes are straight and the edges are crisp for a clean look.

Naturally Speaking

Use the stairway as a source of daily inspiration and encouragement. Use a stencil or, if you feel comfortable painting freehand, paint large leaves in pale shades of green along the walls. Choose your favorite inspirational verses, sayings or lyrics and paint them along the length of the wall. If your painting penmanship is lacking, you can stencil them on or use vinyl graphics that are designed for use on walls. As you travel up and down the stairway, you will be calmed by the natural look and inspired by the words that are painted there.

Perfect Polka Dots

It is not often that you see polka dots on a stairway, but if you are looking for a fun and whimsical way to tie the floors of your home together, this is the perfect way. Paint polka dots of varying sizes in a random pattern on the walls of the stairway. A background of white or beige is ideal, as the colors will then stand out and be more noticeable. Choose colors that are found in the decor of the first floor, as well as colors that are found in the second. This is a great way to make use of the leftover paint that is sitting around after painting a room.

Painting the stairway is a fun way to tie the floors of your home together without a lot of effort. Take the time to coordinate the colors and choose a pattern that fits your home’s style. With a little bit of creativity, your stairway will be a great reflection of your style.
