Changing color from dark to light.

My clothes wardrobe currently has a charcoal color stain. What would you recommend to lighten the color while maintaining the natural grain look?

  1. Not much option I am afraid. Other than applying a solid color stain, lightening a dark stain is not doable. Trouble with a solid color stain is you hide all the grain of the wood while leaving the texture.

  2. Completely stripping and sanding, basically starting over, is the only option. That’s if you still want to keep the wood grain, the stained look. If not then painting is doable but as jay-timmerman said you’d loose the wood grain.
