No clear coat is needed when painting. The paint is all of the protection needed. The best paint is a good 100% acrylic, either a satin or semi-gloss sheen. An important part of painting any fiberglass door is priming with a good acrylic primer.
Adding a clear coat isn’t needed as a sheened quality paint is all that is needed. There are several clear coat options available to enhance durability and aesthetics. Common clear coat options include polyurethane, acrylic, and varnish. Polyurethane clear coat provides excellent UV protection and resistance to chemicals and abrasions, making it ideal for exterior applications. Acrylic clear coat is known for its fast drying time and flexibility, making it suitable for surfaces prone to movement. Spar varnish clear coat delivers superior durability and excellent UV protection.
Polyurethane and varnish have an amber color, this will change the doors appearance. Water based acrylic is a true clear coat.
When it comes to painting the exterior of your fiberglass door, using a high-quality exterior paint is crucial for long-lasting results. Acrylic latex paint is a popular choice for exterior surfaces due to its durability, color retention, and resistance to mildew and fading. Look for paints specifically formulated for exterior use and have a shinier sheen.
