I just painted a white primer/sealer on all the yellowed, old dirty textured walls and ceilings. The coverage is good and it looks great! Is it necessary to apply a coat of paint over this, or can I leave it?

I have a popcorn ceiling that I would like to paint over. The very small “spikes” will likely break off, is that going to look bad when its done?
