Painting old dresser.

share

I have an old dresser and its been painted several times with oil based paint. I sanded it to remove the rough edges, some old chipped paint and now its smooth as can be. Do I use oil based Kilz primer to prevent the previous paint from chipping? I was told if I use oiled based Kilz primer I would have to slightly re-sand the whole dresser, is this true? Last question, do I use oil based high gloss paint over the kilz?
Thanks 🙂

  1. First I will say Kilz primers are over used. They have their place but this is not one of them.

Yes, you should use a primer. Try checking in with a local paint dealer for the appropriate primer. Sherwin-Williams has one called "Easy Sand" which works fine in this type situation.

As for finish, if you use a "universal" primer you will be able to use an oil or acrylic based finish. For furniture, the oil based will give you longer service life.
