Old oil-based semi-gloss paint.

share

I want to paint a kitchen, bathroom, and trim. Currently, these areas have old oil-based paint. There are a number of dings and a few cracks.

How do I paint this correctly without sanding? There might be lead. Wet-sand? Or do I even have to sand before I put the primer on? What primer? My thought was to de-gloss with Krud-Kutter and then go right into priming and then a latex paint (?) Also, the bathrooms get a LOT of steam. What should I do?

  1. Here is how I would do it (for all rooms, especially the bath)… first spackle the dings, nicks etc (do you know proper spackling technique?)… then Stain Seal all with a Pigmented Shellac Sealer Primer… then finish coat with Sherwin Williams Classic-99 (acrylic, color of choice, but use a semi-gloss finish on ALL of the surfaces mentioned)…

You need to let the bath cure for several days (really 2 weeks… that's how long it takes ALL paint to fully cure) before using a steamy shower [take baths, mean while]… and open the door and/or window a bit if you don't have an exhaust fan installed when you do shower (a good idea)… Good Luck!
