Sun light effects on exterior door.

share

My question has to do with morning sun on my front door. The door is set back about 8Ft. with a small porch area, but still gets direct sun. It has caused peeling and cracking on the wood trim on the door and framing. A year ago I scraped, sanded and primed with latex primer & painted. Is there a primer and paint that can better tolerate 4-5 hours of sunlight? Would a shellac based primer be better than a latex base?

  1. A good oil base primer is your best bet. A very high quality acrylic is the best paint for this situation. A semi-gloss would give better results than a satin or flat.

The color has as much to do with lasting quality as the primer or paint. Deep or bright colors will fade faster and show signs of wear sooner.
