Painting any type of rough cut wood requires the use of a good primer. Apply at least two coats of primer to prevent absorption of the paint you are going to use. If possible, when applying the paint, use a spray gun to penetrate the small crevices in the wood. If not, you can use a roller with at least a 3/8" nap to get the paint into all of the crevices.
You want to make sure the surface is smooth and free of dirt, dust, oil, etc. The best way to do this is to sand it, keeping with the grain. This will rough up the surface just a bit and give you a fresh, clean surface for primer. Use a quality primer to seal the wood. Otherwise, the red hue will bleed through most any paint you apply. Once the primer is set, use a quality semi-gloss or eggshell, depending on the look you're after.
