I will answer with the solution I have used for many years. It is one the paint stores would probably say is iffy.
I will add a small amount of appropriately colored stain to a satin varnish, stir, do not shake. These products must both be oil based in nature.
Using a good quality china bristle brush, apply the varnish/stain in a manner of following the grain printed on the door. This takes some practice when the grain turns in a different direction at the sides, top and middle.
Following this color, apply 2 coats of varnish and enjoy.
