Is there a good clear Sealer that lasts?

share

I have just recently had my barn re-sided with cedar. If possible, I would like to seal it with a clear sealer and retain the natural wood look. My professional painter friend says that no clear sealer will last longer than 3-5 years and suggests that I prime the cedar and finish with a solid color stain. He is probably right, but I would like to make sure that I am not missing a product that will allow me to keep the cedar natural and that will last at least 7 years. Does anyone know if such a product exists. Thanks

  1. Your painter friend is right but a little optimistic probably to not cause your friendship harm. In our part of the country, a cedar sided structure needs to be restained every 14 – 18 months.

If any one tells you they have a product which will withstand the u.v. rays for 7 years, get them to do so in writing and give you a deposit for when it fails to live up to beyond 30 months.
