Interior oil based primer on exterior trim.

Will an interior oil based primer work on the exterior trim. What harm will it do if any?

  1. An exterior primer has greater flexibility and stability at varying temperatures. An interior primer is harder, plus has better sanding characteristics for smoother finishes.

For the best paint job possible it is best to use an exterior primer outside and a interior primer inside. The real harm to using an interior oil based primer outside is the increased risk of premature paint failure resulting in peeling.
