  1. In a pinch… good old gasoline will do it too… be careful you don't burn the house down…

  2. To clean a stiff brush that has been left out, you can follow these steps:

    1. Fill a container with warm water and a small amount of mild soap or brush cleaner.
    2. Submerge the brush in the soapy water and let it soak for about 10-15 minutes to loosen the dried paint or residue.
    3. Massage the bristles with your fingers to help remove the stuck-on material. If this isn’t enough use a wire brush to remove the stuck on paint.
    4. Rinse the brush thoroughly under running water to remove all soap and residue.
    5. If the bristles are still stiff, you can use a commercially available brush cleaner, use according to manufactures instructions.
    6. Shape the bristles back to their original form and let the brush air dry completely before storing it.

These steps are for cleaning a stiff latex brush. For oil base brushes (varnish, poly or oil based paint) use the appropriate thinner, like mineral spirits, instead of soap and water. Solvent based brush cleaner also works on oil base brushes.
